The Seed We Planted

Draft in the author’s style. This poem was written for Poet of Blossom to sit beside the author’s own readings, and is waiting for the author’s review. The commentary is a working draft too.

We planted a seed one April, in a pot beside the door,
Not knowing what would flower or what it would stand for.

You watered it with patience and I sang to it at night,
And we watched the first green shoot climb up into the light.

It bent beneath the winter and it trembled in the storm,
But it held onto the soil, for the roots ran deep and warm.

By summer it was blooming in a hundred shades of red,
And the bees came in their thousands to be lovingly fed.

That seed was like our courage, so small it barely showed,
But given time and tending, it grew where the wild rose glowed.

So plant with me tomorrow, and the day after that too,
For love is a slow garden, and it blooms because of you.

Commentary

A seed planted in April is a picture of a young love. The poem follows it through winter and storm to a summer of red blooms, and asks the beloved to keep planting.

The couple plants “a seed one April, in a pot beside the door,” not knowing “what would flower.” One waters “it with patience” and the other sings “to it at night,” and they watch “the first green shoot climb up into the light.”

The plant “bent beneath the winter” and “trembled in the storm,” but “the roots ran deep and warm.” By summer it is “blooming in a hundred shades of red.” The seed is “like our courage, so small it barely showed,” and the poem ends with an invitation: “plant with me tomorrow.”
