Petals on the Doorstep

Draft in the author’s style. This poem was written for Poet of Blossom to sit beside the author’s own readings, and is waiting for the author’s review. The commentary is a working draft too.

I woke to find a scattering of petals on the stair,
A trail of pink and crimson drifting through the morning air.

They led me past the kitchen and the window's golden pane,
To a note that said, be brave today, then meet me in the lane.

I followed every petal like a bird that knows its way,
Through the garden and the gate and the softly dawning day.

There you stood with a basket full of bread and berries sweet,
And a blanket for the meadow, and the sun beneath our feet.

It was not a day of jewels or a gift with a glittering bow,
It was the ordinary magic of a love that likes to show.

Now I sprinkle petals too, on the doorstep and the floor,
For a love that gives in secret is a love worth giving more.

Commentary

A trail of flower petals turns a normal morning into a treasure hunt. The poem celebrates small, secret acts of love that need no jewels to be remembered.

The speaker wakes to “a scattering of petals on the stair,” “a trail of pink and crimson.” The petals lead past the kitchen to “a note that said, be brave today, then meet me in the lane.” The speaker follows “like a bird that knows its way” through the garden.

At the end stands the beloved “with a basket full of bread and berries sweet” and “a blanket for the meadow.” It was “not a day of jewels,” but “the ordinary magic of a love that likes to show.” The speaker now sprinkles “petals too,” for “a love that gives in secret is a love worth giving more.”
