Plant Your Dream

Draft in the author’s style. This poem was written for Poet of Uplift to sit beside the author’s own readings, and is waiting for the author’s review. The commentary is a working draft too.

A dream is like a seed, my friend, that waits within your hand,
For you to plant it in the soil and give it room to stand.

It will not sprout on Monday, and it may not sprout in May,
But the roots are growing downward, in a quiet, hidden way.

You water it with effort, and you weed it with your care,
And you shelter it from storms with a shield of hope and prayer.

The neighbours may not see it, and the critics may not care,
But the seed is not concerned, for it knows what it will bear.

Then one bright morning, on a day you never can foretell,
You will see a tiny shoot rise up, and you will know it well.

So plant your dream today, my friend, and never mind the when,
For the seed that's tended faithfully will blossom in the end.

Commentary

A dream is compared to a seed in this poem: small, slow and full of promise. The poem advises planting it today and trusting the time it needs.

“A dream is like a seed, my friend, that waits within your hand,” for you “to plant it in the soil.” It “will not sprout on Monday, and it may not sprout in May,” but “the roots are growing downward, in a quiet, hidden way.” You “water it with effort” and “weed it with your care.”

“The neighbours may not see it, and the critics may not care, but the seed is not concerned.” One day you will see “a tiny shoot rise up.” The poem ends, “plant your dream today, my friend, and never mind the when.”
